No. 10 UConn (23-7-5) finished as the regular-season champions in Hockey East while No. 13 Northeastern (24-10-3) was second in the standings. The top two seeds in the conference tournament are the lone teams left in advance of Saturday's Huskies-on-Huskies battle at the Toscano Family Ice Forum in Storrs, Connecticut, with an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament at stake. Northeastern has played in the last five NCAA tourneys and has three consecutive Frozen Four appearances. UConn has never played in the NCAA tournament and this season's Hockey East regular-season title is the first in program history. UConn was 19-4-4 in conference play while Northeastern finished 16-8-3.

UConn needed overtime to get past fourth-seeded Boston College 2-1 in Wednesday's semifinal. Kathryn Stockdale ended it 9:10 into the extra session after BC had tied the game early in the third period. Tia Chan stopped 23 shots, including four in OT. Jada Habisch, who scored 1:41 into the game, leads the team with 17 goals and 28 points while Chan is 12-4-4 with a .951 save percentage and 1.27 goals-against average.
Northeastern and No. 3 seed New Hampshire were scoreless through two periods and tied 1-1 with 6:33 remaining in regulation before Lily Shannon's power-play goal gave the Huskies the lead with 1:45 left. Two empty-net goals secured the 4-1 win. Peyton Anderson has 15 goals and Skylar Irving leads the team with 35 points, including 13 goals. Gwyneth Philips is 23-10-3 in net with a .953 save percentage and 1.19 GAA.
UConn took seven of the nine points available in three meetings with Northeastern this season, posting a 3-0 shutout in Boston on Nov. 3 and a 1-0 blanking at home the following night. Northeastern responded with a shootout victory on Feb. 9 at home after finishing overtime tied 2-2.
